Hope and Healing: How April Found Lifechanging Care Through JaxCareConnect

Last November, April attended the TEDx Jacksonville event at the University of North Florida (UNF), where she learned about resources available for individuals in need of healthcare access. Dr. Matthew Thompson, co-founder and CEO of Telescope Health and one of our valued community partners, delivered a speech that particularly resonated with her. He highlighted the increasing number of uninsured Americans who rely on emergency departments as their primary source of care, as well as the strain this places on both patients and the healthcare system.

At the time, April was uninsured and struggling with chronic health issues, including high blood pressure and thyroid problems. When she heard about JaxCareConnect, a local program designed to connect uninsured individuals with affordable, ongoing healthcare, she knew she had to take action. Just a week later, she referred herself to the program.

For the past five years, April had worked full-time as a self-employed individual, but the cost of insurance – more than $900 a month for her and her three children – had kept coverage out of reach. Even routine care felt unattainable once you factored in the price of medications and specialty visits.

Through JaxCareConnect, April found the support she needed. A dedicated Patient Health Advocate helped guide her through the process, ultimately connecting her with Volunteers In Medicine, a free clinic that provides comprehensive care for the working uninsured. There, April received primary care, women’s health services, and nutritional counseling – all at no cost. She also gained access to diagnostic testing and specialty care, including gastroenterology services through WeCareJax

“For the first time ever, I feel like I am going to be okay! [It’s a] priceless feeling,” April shares. “I can’t say enough wonderful things about the JaxCareConnect program. They gave me hope during a tough time. I’m not being dramatic when I say it saved my life.”

April’s experience is a powerful example of how community-based solutions are making a real difference in people’s lives. By bridging the gap between need and access, and connecting individuals to compassionate care, JaxCareConnect is helping our uninsured neighbors get the care they deserve – just when they need it most.
